Fresh violence in Iraq, Friday 20 August 2004,has seen oil prices surge to new records, nearing $50 a barrel. New York light crude climbed as high as $48.98 a barrel in Asian trading, following threats of militia attacks on Iraqi pipelines. Purnomo Yusgiantoro, president of oil cartel Opec, told reporters he was concerned about the rising oil price.
